These days it seems we all have hectic schedules. Personally, my days are jammed;  between juggling my consulting business and my online business my free time is precious.  I need to schedule walking my dog, hitting the gym, stocking up on groceries and even girls nightout.  So needless to say, I’m always open to new ways I can save some time. I work from home most days because it saves 30 minutes (round trip) in commuting.  Plus add up the time I don’t have to blow-dry my hair and I have an extra 90 minutes.

Meal prep has always been timing consuming and daunting to me. But for over 10 years I’ve been pretty consistent on setting time aside on Sunday evenings. If I don’t have half a dozen chicken breasts cooked or a fresh pot of turkey chili made my week gets chaotic and I start making really bad food choices.

I placed my first order at 2GuysWithKnives on Thursday evening and the food was delivered Sunday afternoon. I bought two main courses,  2 salads and a bag of protein balls for my sweet cravings. The total with tax and free delivery was $68.25.  Additionally, I spent $30.00 at the grocery store on fruits, vegetables, nuts, eggs, and almond milk. Being this was my first order, I wasn’t sure if it would be enough food to fuel me through my busy work schedule and daily workouts?

The short answer is no, I ran out of meals on Thursday.  That being said, the meals were fresh, very flavorful and packed with nutrients! For me, the entrees (rectangle containers) were big enough for two generous portions. But more importantly, I saved about 30-45 minutes a day in the kitchen! Single ladies, let’s be honest, we’ve experienced that Valentine’s Day where we had super high expectations only to be highly disappointed. Was your boyfriend ever as romantic as Ryan Gosling in The Notebook? I bet he sure as heck didn’t have Patrick Swayze’s moves like in Dirty Dancing. If February 14th was the only day of the year he got you flowers, he probably paid more attention to TV ads than he did you. Then there’s Vday dinner; the restaurants are all booked solid, so you better plan ahead and get a reservation; and make sure your man doesn’t forget his wallet because set menus are always way over priced!  So single ladies, REAL TALK! This year you will NOT sit at home feeling sorry for yourself or spend the day romanticizing about your ex.  Good riddance!

Don’t block love with any negative vibes! Love doesn’t just come from romance; it comes from your friends & family, the universe, your pet and most importantly it comes from yourself. Remember that your heart determines your true relationship status. Now if you’re thinking Valentine’s Day is a made-up Hallmark Holiday you’ll ignore; to that I say, “Good luck!”  Unless you’re living under a rock, you will have to witness co-workers get flower deliveries, heart shaped chocolates and candies will be everywhere and not to mention your Facebook feed will be loaded with love gushing posts. So, as Eckhart Tolle would say,

So on this February 14, 2018 I invite all the single ladies to celebrate not having to celebrate Valentine’s day!

1. Spoil yourself: On this special day, treat yourself like the princess you are! Take the day off work and go to the spa for a massage. Then when you get home, light some candles, take a relaxing bath with your best bubbles, and finish off the day by ordering your favorite food and binge watching Nextflix.2. Go out with you lady soul mate(s): Get dressed up as though you’re going out on a hot date, make a reservation at your favorite restaurant and hit the town with all your single girls. Spend the night laughing about all your terrible Tinder dates and how you once thought you’d never get over your ex? LMFAO!!!

3. Go outside: Get out doors and be one with nature.  Go for a hike, skiing, ice skating or snowshoeing

4. Go shopping – that purse you’ve been eyeing. go get it! Those shoes, you thought were too expensive, they’re yours.  That adorable dress you have no where to wear. Treat yourself, buy it!

5. Give love: Giving always feels better than receiving; get your single friends a card, a box of chocolates or bouquet of flowers and remind them they are loved. Volunteer at a shelter or old folks home. Helping the less fortunate and being the reason, someone smiles because of you is a small gesture that can go a long way. Plus, it being nice feels so much better than stuffing your face with chocolate. Do not drown your sorrows in a box of chocolates!

6. Get your sweat on: try a new fitness class and get your sweat on. Have you ever heard anyone say “damn I shouldn’t have done that workout?” Physical activity stimulates various brain chemicals that leaves you feeling happier and more relaxed.  Why endorphins and exercise makes you happy.

7.  Alone is better than miserable: Remember being single is always better than being in a relationship that doesn’t fit right, is dysfunctional or is no longer serves you. A boyfriend doesn’t necessarily mean you’re in a happy place. Now don’t get my wrong,  I do believe we all have a prince charming somewhere out there, but while we wait for him to show up in his new Tesla, we will not lay around like sleeping beauties. On February 14th celebrate not having to celebrate Valentine’s day while you still can!

I’ve been following @NYCPretty for some time now and the first few weeks of January I was lovin’ her Insta posts featuring the launch of her new Starlight Tights. Anything with stars, the moon, or that has a “spiritual chic” vibe to it  – is a must have these days!

Twice I went online to purchase myself a pair and got side tracked. Then not long before I left for my Fit & Fit Girl’s luxury fitness retreat in Costa Rica I received an email from the owner Rebecca Garland telling me that Christine from NYC Pretty and her husband John (a professional photographer) would be attending the retreat.  “Not sure how but you know I’m getting myself a pair of those Starlight Tights!” I told myself.

Fast forward to the sixth day of the fitness retreat, Hannah (our personal trainer) and Christine walked into the villa after modeling for a photo shoot and dropped off a big box of fitness wear for us. We all rummaged through the fitness apparel, picking & choosing the pieces that suited us best. Then Hannah came back and said, “Here’s one more pair of leggings.” and threw a pair of NYC Pretty Starlight Tights in the box. All those beach sprints and hill runs came in handy because I shot up and grabbed those leggings before anyone had a chance to even blink! I pulled them on as fast as possible, hoping to god they were my size. Perfection!

Early last year I was in the process of re-designing www.fitandflirty.com and I had a vision for the images; I took the time to story-board every scene; which included me in a variety of fun fitness wear doing different workouts with a bottle of champagne always visible somewhere in the photograph. (Sorta like a Superman figure can always be seen in almost every Seinfeld episode) I hired a photographer but alas, life got in the way and although my new site launched the photography project never came to fruition.

So, when these few seemingly insignificant moments lined up and these pictures were the outcome, I could not ignore the magical work of the universe. Serendipity comes in many forms; know that the universe wants to give you what you desire. Ask, then be patient and trust in the timing. The universe will deliver what you need at the right time and will remove what is no longer serving you. Remember, not matter how big or small the wish granted, always practice gratitude.

On January 20th I arrived to Fit and Fly Girl Luxury Fitness Retreat in Tamarindo, Costa Rica. This unique fitness retreat series is organized by owner Rebecca Garland. Her desire is to bring women together, combining travel with the pursuit of a balanced and healthy lifestyle.

A fitness retreat is about escaping  your everyday life and taking the time to focus on yourself. Body By Hannah & NYC Pretty

At this particular fitness retreat we were a group of 16 ladies staying in the luxurious Don Vito Villa. We were spoiled with nutritious and delicious meals prepared by our own personal in house Chef Fabien Mandrea.  Our body assessment, daily workouts and yoga practices were all taught by Hannah Davis, a certified strength and conditioning specialist, also known for her training program called Body By Hannah.

Christine BibboHerr the fitness and fashion blogger from @NYCPretty was also part of our fitness group and he husband John a professional photographer, took on the role of “paparazzi”,  capturing our moments of pain and dripping sweat.

 

Here is a summary of my week at Fit & Fly Girl’s luxury fitness retreat in Costa Rica.

Fit & Fly Girl’s Costa Rica Jan 2018 Schedule

Day One – Saturday January 20th

All the ladies arrived at the villa and Hannah conducted individual fitness assessments to learn our personal fitness objective for the week. She also took our body measurements and before and after photos to show us how much progress can really be made in seven days.

We had our first body shake out class which was a short 30 minute workout with dynamic stretching to open up our tight muscles after a long day of travel and prepare us for the week ahead.

After dinner we sat around getting to know each other.

Day Two – Sunday January 21st

Rise and shine at 7 :00 am, inject caffeine before a short foam rolling session and we were out the door before 8 am for our first Full Body & Strength Class at the gym next door to the villa. This hour workout was designed to build muscle and tone us up. The workout included eight strength training stations performing 3 x 1 minutes per exercises. Stronger is better!

10:30 am – Time to Surf!

Surf Day Fitness Retreat January 2018

This was my first time surfing; I wasn’t sure if I’d enjoy it, but it was an amazing!! Thanks to the patient instructors at Iguana Surf I  managed to get up five times and I fell a more times than I can count; I have the bruises to prove it.  In all aspect of life you should never be afraid to try something new and push your limits!

Later that afternoon we took advantage of our free time to watch the NFL playoffs. Go Jacksonville Jaguars!

5:30 pm – We wrapped up the day up with a vinyasa yoga and guided meditation. A much needed stretch session after a tough day of surfing.

Day Three – Monday January 22nd

8:00 am Body FHITT class at the beach. This was a team based high interval class to improve our metabolic conditioning and burn max calories in the shortest amount of time. The heat and sand made this workout extra challenging,

Down time I spent the afternoon at Coco Spa getting my sore muscles massaged.

Day Four – Tuesday January 23rd

Body Team Training Class by Body By Hannah

8 am we were back to the beach for a Body Team Training Class. (My personal favorite workout of the week) This was a partner-based beach workout which had us focused on pushing our physical limits as we accumulated points for our team. There is something very powerful about working with a partner and not wanting to let down your teammates. I personally thrive with a some friendly competition!

On Tuesday evening we had the pleasure of going to the La Senda labyrinth. Unlike a maze you can not get lost because a labyrinth has only one path which symbolizes our life’s journey and takes us inward guiding us to find out who we really are. We had a guided meditation in the middle of the labyrinth which was a magical experience for me. Another  marvelous dinner was prepared for us on the  La Senda property using fresh organic vegetable grown on the scared land.

Day 5 – Wednesday January 24th

8 am workout in the backyard at the Don Vito Villa. The 60 minute body power class was focused on building power and helping us to tap into our fast switch muscle fibers to stay quick and powerful,

Followed by a 30 minute optional hill sprint workout, which of course I was keen to partake!  All those years of running in higher elevations and hills of Vancouver BC proved to be good training for this workout.

We spent the rest of the day soaking in the beauty of Tamarindo on a boat, sipping cold cocktails, waddling in the water and just hanging out.

Day 6 – Thursday January 25th

Adventure day: fun filled day included zip lining, a mud bath, horseback riding, rafting and much more!

Day 7 – Friday January 26th

Time to double up!

8 am. Body FHITT workout at the beach.  A super high intensity interval class designed to improve our metabolic conditioning and burn maximum calories in the shortness amour of time.

That’s afternoon I had time to relax at the spa again for a facial before we went back to the beach for a sunset body burn out class. An all body weight exercises to burnout the legs, arms and abs like nothing we’d done yet.

Although every woman on this retreat had a different fitness level, background and reason to travel to Costa Rica, we all had two things in common: we all wanting to better ourselves physically and I think we all had some kind of  personal quest. Some were seeking new experiences or adventure, others wanted to establish new fitness and health habits. Some wanted to step away from their daily grind and evaluate life and break out of their comfort zone and other others wanted to make new connections.

Personally I got all of the above and more from this experience. The Fit and Fly Girl luxury fitness retreat combined my two loves; fitness and travel and gave me time to reset and evaluate many things of my life. Thanks to our personal trainer Hannah (who was extremely relatable)  after only seven days I walked away stronger and feeling inspired to push myself  further on my personal fitness journey. I think we can all agree we shared personal and physical breakthroughs, lots sweat, laughter and some wine too! We all made special memories and real friendships were created! I feel blessed to have been part of such a powerful, determined, strong, creative and caring group of women!

I don’t know why it took me so long, but I finally purchased some leggings from Fabletics, fabulous fitness fashion by Kate Hudson. Seriously, how can you not love Kate Hudson? She’s the beautiful girl next door that seems to have it all yet has managed to remain humble and charming!

My first SoulCycle ride was in San Francisco in November 2015 and it changed my spinning expectations.  I’ve been to a dozen different studios since, and not to say I didn’t enjoy every single workout (cause there’s no such things as a bad workout right?) but no ride has come close. It’s like when you meet the guy of your dreams, and then he vanishes…you’ll meet other people, but the feeling just isn’t the same…

As a female juggling two completely different businesses I understand the struggles and the highs and lows that come with being self-employed, so I like to make a point of supporting small businesses.  For me it’s also important to learn about where my purchase is coming from and who dreamed it up. Getting to know the soul that birthed its creation somehow makes the purchase process magical.

Like so many runners, it didn’t take much for Lisa to get hooked. After she completed her first 5km race she was a full blown running addict.  As a former marine, running was definitely not foreign to her but the feeling of satisfaction and joy that accompanied her when she started running for herself was unfamiliar. 

FIT & Flirty – When did you start your company?

Lisa- I am actually coming up on my one year anniversary which is very exciting!! December 6th of 2016 was our official launch date!! I cannot believe it has been almost one whole year!!

FIT & Flirty- What was the biggest obstacle you had to overcome to see your dream come to fruition?

Lisa- Ahh, my biggest obstacle was myself! lol. I don’t know how many times I’ve talked myself down from this. I’d get excited and then I would say to myself “meh, maybe it’s not a great idea, maybe I’ll be in over my head!”

FIT & Flirty – How do you come up with the slogans/sayings/ideas?

Lisa – Most of the time my ideas come when I’m out on a run! (hence “Designs Born on the Run”)  I’ve had to stop in the middle of my run to jot my thoughts and ideas down on my phone notes so I don’t forget later! The ideas really just flow in. I have a slew of slogans just sitting and waiting. Some may never make it out, but I keep ideas tucked away. Some ideas are really just random thoughts I jot down and may only make sense to me, but I know, in my mind, where I want to go with it. Some ideas are instant and some take time to develop into what makes sense in my head! My latest design for the New York City Marathon was born while I was on a girls trip to NYC way back in April! I knew I wanted to do a shirt for the race, like i did for the Boston Marathon, but it had to be right and it had to come to me. I was running in L.I.C.(Long Island City) Hunter’s Point South Park Pier and along with playing Alicia Keys’ song in the car “Empire State of Mind Part II”, the idea was born. I’ve revised it so many times since that trip, until finally settling on THE one! (I’ll attach pic from running on pier in regular clothes and heeled boots lol…we were just having fun with pics. i f you want to use it)

FIT & Flirty – What’s does a running week for Lisa look like?

Lisa – Right now I am dealing with a nagging hamstring injury so I’m not getting out there like I want to! 🙁 I’m probably only running anywhere from 9-15 miles a week. I’m not currently training for anything, but I’m dying to get back to feeling strong again and crushing some goals!

FIT & Flirty  – They say that our biggest challenges in life make us who we are; is there a lesson or message you learned during your battle with cancer and would you like share with my readers?

Lisa – Life really is a gift. Try to live each day as such and embrace the good with the bad. If there is something you are unhappy with then make the change. It can start with a small change, a single step towards the bigger picture. I know that sometimes this can be easier said than done (I still work on this everyday), but just know you are stronger than you think and capable of so much more than you think! Never stop fighting!

A true inspiration; with her life shaken to the core with the diagnosis of cancer she persisted, stayed positive and today (bless her heart) is in full remission, living every day to its fullest!

On this Hallow’s Eve I wanted to shed light and honor today’s modern time witches that are among us; living their truth as strong, peaceful and magical women. Although witches are mostly known as the iconic Halloween character; usually dressed in black with a pointy hat, green skin and flying on a broom stick across the full moon I am here to tell you witches are so much more than a Halloween cliche!

Here’s some very brief history:

Most stereotypes come from the western culture but witchcraft has existed around the world and throughout history in Asian, African and many Native American societies.

Witches were blamed for storms, deaths, accidents, diseases and many other bad things. Witches were typically unmarried, middle aged woman between the ages of 20 and 30 years old. (average life span was 50 years old) She was thought to have received her powers by signing a deal with the devil and he would leave his mark as proof in the form of a mole, birthmark or scar.  It was also believed that the witch would travel with a familiar; which was thought to be a demon in disguise aiding in her bidding; this demon would take on the form of an animal, such as a goat or a cow, but most commonly a black cat.

When witches go riding and black cats are seen the moon laughs and whispers, tis near Halloween.”

If accused of witchcraft she could be summoned to an identity test where she would be pushed off a cliff. If she was a witch she would fly away and if she was not she would die an honorable death. But more often than not, if presumed to be a witch she was burned at the stake. It is estimated that between the 14th and 16th century there was over 100,000 people accused of witchcraft. Although a few men and children were killed it’s been said that at least 90% of the 50,000 + executed were women. Including 20 during the famous witch trials that took place February 1692 and May 1693 in Salem Massachusetts. 19 were hung and 1 was crushed to death.

Did you know in today’s modern time, witches still exist?  The modern form of witchcraft known as Wicca was founded in England in the 1950’s. Its members worship nature, and a female goddess. They take an oath to do no harm with their magic. Contrary to many beliefs Wicca is a very peaceful, harmonious and balanced way of life which promotes oneness with the divine and all which exists. There are now more than 400,000 Wiccans in the United States.  But you probably won’t recognize them walking in the streets, since they don’t wear pointy hats or have green skin.
